You’re wrapped in a blanket, sipping hot chocolate and the air smells like sugar cookies. There’s a holiday movie playing and you can hear carolers off in the distance. You look over and see the light of the tree along with all the ornaments you’ve collected over the years. The Christmas season is in full swing.
An opinion shared by many people is that the Christmas season is the best part of the year. I definitely agree with that opinion and look forward to it every year. However, people’s opinions on when Christmas season officially starts are a little more split. As much as I love Christmas, I also love fall. That’s why I think you should start celebrating Christmas the day after Thanksgiving.
One opinion, mostly held by stores around the world, is that the Christmas season starts the day after Halloween, even sometimes before that. Walking into HEB on Nov. 1st, you can already find Christmas decor and themed foods on display. Some restaurants and coffee shops started releasing their Christmas menus early, like Dutch Bros on Nov. 1 and Starbucks on Nov. 6. All in all, it seems like a great marketing strategy for these companies especially because everyone loves holiday drinks.
However, to start the Christmas season so early in November would be forgetting about Thanksgiving and the remainder of fall. I am someone who will start celebrating fall on Sept. 1, ignoring what the calendar says. Many people like to cut fall short, and deem all of November and December as part of the holiday season, so fall months begin to feel like winter. Now, cutting fall short following Thanksgiving isn’t too big of a deal, considering the fact that fall actually ends way later than it should on Dec. 21. But my issue is when November, a perfectly good fall month, starts to feel like winter.
When you think Christmas season starts also has to do with where you live. Here in Texas, it might still be 80 degrees on Christmas day. No Christmas in Texas will ever be a “White Christmas” as you might see in some of the colder states. It’s easier for colder places to start feeling the Winter vibe when it’s snowing in November. I think that since we are here in Texas, we should take advantage of the warm weather and have fun with fall for as long as we can.
Waking up early on Black Friday, setting up the Christmas tree with your family, making cookies and listening to my favorite holiday songs is one of my favorite feelings. Black Friday is also the perfect day to shop for Christmas gifts. The Christmas season is great but waiting just a little bit longer for it to start may just make it that much sweeter. Hold onto your pumpkin spice and fall outfits until after Thanksgiving and soak in the holiday season.
