The dog days of summer had nothing on the DSHS tennis program preparing for a promising season- practicing nearly a month prior to the first day of school. For Varsity Tennis captain, Ethan Nebrig, his senior season isn’t just about the final score at the end of a tournament. It’s about uniting his team to success one last time.
Though the team is knee-deep in tennis tournaments- playing games numerous times a week- the most anticipated part of the season for Nebrig is the district tournament.
“It’s going to be pretty intense this year,” Nebrig said. “We have a lot of good competition and I think [the team] is going to do a lot better than last year.”
While the tennis team has a solid reputation on and off the courts, Nebrig revealed that when the district tournament comes along, rivalries will test the team’s skills.
“Boerne Champion [High School] has been a pretty good rival for a couple years now…” Nebrig said. “We’ve lost to Austin High in past years, but this year we’re looking to take them down.”
In order to succeed in Districts, both JV and Varsity teams will need a strong sense of unity to transfer to the doubles matches.
“[Being a captain] is a responsibility and I have to lead, so I get to know everybody and make friends with the team. If needed, I’ll hash out some of the problems some [players] have with each other,” Nebrig said.
Ethan Nebrig has an optimistic view on the season, despite undergoing a recent loss early on in this season from Varsity Lake Travis.
“It’s going to be a good season,” Nebrig said. “We’ve only lost to Lake Travis, so I think the rest of the season is going to be okay.”
After winning 10-1 against Bowie on Sept. 15, Nebrig wears the MVP title by helping improve Drip in District 3-1. Sept. 26 was the last typical varsity match played at home at 4:00 pm, before the district tournament begins Sept. 29.
